If you’re pregnant now or have been in the past you’ve probably noticed the change in your bra cup size. These physical changes along with tender swollen breasts may have been one of the earliest clues that you have successfully conceived. Some experts believe that the colour change in your areola may also be helpful when it comes to breastfeeding.

What’s even more remarkable than the visible changes or ones that you can feel are the extensive changes that are happening inside your breasts underneath the skin. A complex biological process is taking place that makes lactation possible and this is stimulated into action by a developing placenta causing the release of estrogen and progesterone into your body.

Prior to pregnancy, the larger portion of your breasts are made up of supportive tissue, milk glands and fat. Your swollen breasts have been preparing for reproduction for the entire time that you have existed!

By the time you were born your main milk dusts had already been formed. When you reached puberty a flood of the female hormone estrogen was responsible for causing your mammary glands to grow and swell. During your pregnancy these glands go into overdrive with the increased amounts of estrogen.

Prior to your baby’s arrival glandular tissue replaces the majority of your fat cells and this is what makes your breasts larger than before. Each breast may increase by up to one and a half extra pounds.

Among this mass of your fatty cells and glandular tissue is an intricate network of canals or channels which are your milk ducts. The hormones released during your pregnancy cause these ducts to increase both in number and size and these ducts branch off into smaller canals near your chest wall known as ductules.

A cluster of smaller sacs are located at the end of each duct which are known as alveoli. Each cluster of alveoli is called a lobule and each cluster of lobules is called a lobe. Each one of your breasts will contain around 15-20 lobes with one milk duct for each lobe.

Your milk is produced inside your alveoli which is surrounded by tiny muscles which squeeze the glands and help to push your milk out into the ductules. Leading on from the ductules are larger ducts which then widen into a milk pool directly beneath the areola.

These milk pools then act as reservoirs that hold your milk until your baby sucks it through the tiny openings in your nipples.

Amazingly, nature ensures that your complete milk producing system is fully developed around the time of your second trimester thereby ensuring that you are able to breastfeed your baby even if there’s an unexpected early arrival.

As a mother giving the best for our child is our top priority especially in relation to breastfeeding. In some cases, the breastmilk production is not enough to supply our kid's needs. There are 5 tips that you can do to increase your breastmilk production.

As pregnancy progresses the excitement to become a mother is increasing as well, especially when it’s your first baby. But not only the excitement of meeting your baby soon that increases, the anxiousness also increases. Being a first time mum where you know everything only in theory, it’s time for you to make a certain decision now when the baby not even born such as breastfeeding. You probably know by now that breastfeeding is very important and probably the best thing for your baby. Breastfeeding is highly recommended especially for the first 6 months. You probably hear lots of story where someone’s breast milk production is not enough and it prompted her to switch to formula milk. This article will share 5 tips to increase breast milk production.

There are 5 tips that you can do to help you increase your milk production after your baby is born

1. The first 2 days after your baby is born keep breastfeding her/him every time the baby asks even though there’s not much of it there. The first few days are very important for your breastmilk production so lots of stimulation from your baby makes an important role on your milk production.
2. Drink plenty of water as the amount of water you consumed correlates with your breast milk production.
3. Don’t start a diet yet instead eat a lot of healthy food such as fruit and veggies.
4. Eat a lot of beans nuts and grains
5. Try to pump your breast milk every 1.5 hours after you breastfed your baby and stored your pumped breast milk in the freezer. The stored breast milk can be used when your baby still hungry after you feed him/her later.

If you follow tips described in the previous paragraph, you don’t have to worry that you don’t have enough breastmilk for your baby. All you need to do is to follow the tips and learn how to pump your breast as pumping can be tricky especially if you never done it before.

The Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accept, pasteurize, and dispense donor human milk by physician prescription primarily to premature and ill infants.

Research shows preemies fed human milk, as opposed to infant formula, avoid serious medical complications, gain immunological benefits, and grow. One in eight babies are born premature, yet half of mothers of preemies aren’t able to provide their baby with breast milk. That’s why donating milk matters. After medical screening, mothers of healthy babies donate frozen milk at 11 milk depots around Texas.

Our courier delivers donated milk to Austin where we test it, pasteurize it, perform nutritional analysis, and bottle it. Then we deliver milk with a tested caloric count targeted to babies growth needs to hospital neonatal ICUs in Central Texas, Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and in six other states. This year well dispense 260,000 ounces of milk to help about 1,500 fragile babies thrive. That means we’re counting on 300 women—and their babies—to share their milk.

Express your inner lifesaver. Tell your friends. Save a baby, donate milk! Get more info: www.milkbank.org
