Are you 9 months pregnant and wondering what to do about your nursing bras? Aren’t sure what to look for in a nursing bra? Here are 6 tips you can use when buying a nursing bra.

1) When should I buy a nursing bra?
The most common questions moms to be often ask is when is the best time to buy a nursing bra and what size should they buy. If you plan to nurse, the best time to buy a nursing bra is in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters when your pre-pregnancy bras no longer fit comfortably and when you need to buy a larger bra. Your breasts will continue to enlarge up to the time you deliver your baby and after your milk comes in. However, they will settle down in size after your milk supply adjusts to the baby’s demands and even more when you begin to wean your baby from feedings. Most likely you will need a nursing bra for as long as you are nursing your baby, so even if your 2nd trimester bra purchase is too small for your breasts immediately after delivery, it should fit you down the way as your size decreases.

2) What type of nursing bra should I buy?
There are so many types of nursing bras on the market and for a range of prices. It can be overwhelming knowing where to start. While you are pregnant and purchasing a nursing bra for both maternity and nursing, it is best to buy a nursing bra that is supportive with some extra room for pads which you will need in the early nursing stages. The best types of nursing bras for soon after delivery are those that can expand several cup and band sizes. The bras that stretch to fit multiple sizes typically do not have an underwire and are softcup which maximizes cup accommodation ability as well as comfort for the early stages of nursing.

3) What features should I look for in a nursing bra?
The most important feature in a nursing bra is comfort. Many women find that their breasts expand a full cup size or two when pregnant and nursing. It is often uncomfortable sleeping at night without a bra or even showering without a bra if your cup size is quickly moving down the alphabet. Many women find they need a range of bra types from an easy support sleeping and lounging bra to a more supportive daytime bra. If you plan on pumping it is good idea to get a hands free nursing and pumping bra which is extra supportive.

4) How do I get the most mileage out of my nursing bra?
As you know your cup and band size will fluctuate when pregnant and nursing. After you have your baby you will find your rib size will gradually decrease. If you are buying a nursing bra in your last trimester, it is a good idea to buy one that is not too tight around the band. Many bras have several adjustment hooks on the back to allow several size differences in the band. Look for a bra where you are on the last hook in your last month of pregnancy. You can also buy bra extenders that allow you to extend your strap by several band sizes for a bra that is too tight around the rib cage.

5) What nursing bras are easiest to use?
There are many different styles in nursing bras such as the cross over pull down style, cups that you unhook from each side, those that snap and those that clip. Find the style that works easiest for you. Many women find having several different styles may accommodate their lifestyle the easiest. If you plan to wear a nursing bra at night, look for a light support pull down bra. Chances are if you are half asleep and in the middle of the night you don’t want to be fumbling around in the dark for a hook or a snap and your baby will not want to wait around to be fed. For your daytime bra, make sure the snap or hook stays in place with your usual movements and activities as there is nothing worse than a cup coming unhooked on its own in public or trying to rescue a bra that is leaving you lopsided while checking out at the grocery store.

6) What if I want to exercise?
Fortunately today there are a lot of great nursing sport bras on the market, so you can still hit the gym and get the bra support you need when you are a nursing mom. Bravado! makes an excellent nursing sports bra with a lot of great support and comfortable fabric. Sports bras in particular need to have secure snaps to make sure you don’t pop out while on the treadmill or lifting weights. Comfort in fit and range in motion is also very important, so make sure you get a bra that fits properly with room to support your breasts’ ebbs and flows with your nursing cycles.

If you plan to breastfeed your baby, it is very important that you select a high quality supportive nursing bra with a comfortable fit. The best time to purchase a nursing bra is a few weeks before your due date so that your rib and bust size will be close to the same size as they will be following delivery of your baby. Also, you need to be sure to have a few nursing bras on hand for the first few hectic weeks after the baby is born as you certainly will not have the time or energy for a shopping expedition!

To ensure the best fit, take these measurements at home while wearing a good fitting but unpadded bra:

For your Band Size: Measure around your body just under your arms while keeping the tape snug but not tight. If the measurement is an odd number, round up to the next even number. This number is your band size.

For your Cup Size: Measure around your body over the fullest part of your bust. Subtract this measurement from your band size. Each 1” difference represents one cup size. 1”=A Cup, 2”=B Cup, 3”=C Cup, 4” = D Cup, 5” = DD Cup, etc. So, if your band size is 36” and your measurement across the fullest part of your bust is 40”, then you would wear a 36D.

If your current bra you are using for measurements is too small or not very supportive, you many understate your true cup size. There should be no breast tissue beyond the side seam on either side of your bra. Also, there should be not spilling out of the top of your bra, as you would have in a too small or push up bra, as this will also affect your measurements.

For a proper fit, the bra band should be snug and should not ride up on your back as you wear it. Most women’s upper bodies do slim down quite a bit following delivery, so make sure that the bra you choose is either adjustable around the rib cage and you are on the last set of hooks, of has a stretchy band which will continue to fit a shrinking rib cage.

When your milk comes in, usually by 3-5 days postpartum, allow some extra room in the cup. You may need to purchase a larger size bra after your milk comes in and you can switch back to a smaller size once your milk supply is regulated and your hormones subside, usually 2-3 months postpartum. Also, your cup size will probably be bigger for those first few days when your milk comes in and subside some in the following weeks. Oftentimes women rotate through several sizes in a nursing bra during the first few months until their size is more stabilized.

Many women ask about wearing underwire nursing bras. Many lactation consultants prefer nursing mothers to wear softcup bras for the early weeks of breastfeeding as your milk supply comes in and your size is changing. Underwire bras, particularly if they are too small or tight, can dig into your breast tissue and clog a milk duct which can lead to mastitis. However, many women prefer the support of an underwire bra, and can comfortably wear one. If you do choose an underwire bar, make sure that the bra fits properly and that the wire is not pressing on any part of your breast.

A common question from first time pregnant mums is do I really need breastfeeding clothes? Why? It’s a bit like chocolate, you don’t actually need it, but once you had some, you can’t be without it! I discovered nursing wear after the birth of my second son and I can’t believe how I ever managed before with my first son two years prior. I now realise I spent a lot of time hidden away in mother’s rooms and away from the action. Specially designed breastfeeding clothes really can make your easier in the following ways:

No more exposed belly!

Like many first time mums I was very self-conscious about breastfeeding in public and definitely didn’t want to share my stretch marks and saggy tummy with the world! With regular clothes you need to undo buttons or pull up your clothing to feed your baby. Nursing wear has specially designed hidden nursing openings that allow you to easily feed discreetly without all your bits on display.

Breastfeeding in public

Many breastfeeding tops today look like the latest fashion and allow you to breastfeed in public without anyone knowing. I found them fantastic when I was out with friends for coffee or lunch because I could breastfeed at the table without anyone knowing and no longer did I need to miss out the gossip because I had to find a mother’s room. For people who weren’t mums or parents it also made them feel comfortable as you really can’t see anything at all.

Keep you warm in winter

There is nothing worse than a cold belly and back in the middle of winter when you are breastfeeding, particularly at night. I loved the fact I could keep covered and warm in my breastfeeding clothes while nursing – especially at 2am in the morning!

Special Occasions

No longer are you stuck with oversized button-up tops for those special occasions such as weddings and christenings. Today’s contemporary nursing wear also includes dresses, which is fantastic for when you want to wear something nice and feel like a person again! The best thing is no one will ever know you are wearing breastfeeding clothes and you won’t feel uncomfortable having to feed in front of others which you often have to do in restaurants, churches, etc.

Feel Great

After the birth of a baby you can often feel a little down and frumpy as you old clothes still don’t fit and you are sick of your maternity clothes. Nursing wear is designed for the post-baby shape and will see you through the first 12 months or longer of your baby’s life. It really does lift your spirits having something nice to wear which is also practical.

Besides you can afford to spoil yourself when you think of all the money you save by breastfeeding and not having to buy formula, bottles and cleaning equipment. You definitely deserve it!

Kelly Gough is a business mum who manages online store Nuvo Maternity (http://www.nuvomaternity.com.au) while also caring for her two small boys. Nuvo Maternity specialises in nursing wear and breastfeeding clothes.
