Back in the day, formula was the preferred method for feeding babies, but with the movement toward more natural and healthy feeding, breast milk has moved back to the forefront. With most mothers having to go to work to make ends meet, breast milk storage is becoming more common place. Expressing the milk and storing it for later use is one solution to this issue.

Breast milk pumps and storage containers are quite portable and most employers will understand the need for this in the workplace. All you need is a little privacy and some time to accomplish this task with minimal fuss. Most offices have some type of refrigerator for employee use. Mom can ask for permission for the milk to be stored in once it is pumped until it’s time to go home.

As far as privacy, if you are lucky enough to have your own office then locking the door takes care of that. If not, a simple request to the employer will likely get you an area where this can be done, possibly an unoccupied office in your area. Then there is your car, if necessary, as it is private especially if you move to a low traffic area of the parking lot.

Lastly, old faithful for privacy, the restroom. While not the most sanitary or hygienic of conditions, this will assure you are undisturbed while you pump the breast milk. Once done, into the freezer it goes until quitting time, properly labeled of course.

Employers and co workers will be especially sympathetic towards the need for this. Most know how difficult it is for a new mother to be away from her baby in the beginning. You are more likely to get a sympathetic ear than to hear criticism when you need to store your breast milk at work.

A breast milk storage system uses containers that are reusable and washable up to 3 times. These are equally well for frozen storage as are the bags. These containers can then be thawed and with a nipple placed on top, be used to feed with rather than transferring to another bottle. Working mothers will really appreciate the Ease of Breast Milk Storage.

This article discusses the Medela Swing Breast Pump. This breast pump is a very affordable breast pump.

Medela is well known for offering a line of high quality, high performance breast pumps. Their Swing Pump model with Medela 2 Phase Expression Technology is no exception. This pump has the same technology that is used for hospital breast pumps. The pump is very effective at pumping breast milk with ease.

The Medela Swing Pump is designed to pump your milk in such a way that it feels as if your baby is feeding at your breast. (This means the pump is designed to simulate your baby actually feeding rather than feeling like a mechanical pump). The pump has good suction especially for a single pump system.

A Medela pump is comfortable on your breasts. The breast shield is not uncomfortable in any way. This is unlike other brands that feel terrible when you are pumping the milk. The pump is not as fast as one with the double pumps. However, the Swing Pump is still able to pump breast milk in a relatively short amount of time.

Your Medela Swing Pump will be easy for you to take with you anywhere you need to go. It is in fact so compact that you can even throw it in your purse when you need to be away from home. This pump is so great because it is a breeze to you. In fact it only has four controls that you need to worry about. You can assemble and disassemble this pump for cleaning and use in a matter of seconds.

The pump can be a little noisy when you are pumping milk. You might find it a tad distracting if you are trying to work on something else at the same time. That is one of the only significant downsides to the Medela Swing Pump.

The pump works rather well. Of course it is not as fast and efficient as double pumps or some of the other pumps that are not so portable. However, there really are not many disadvantages to using this pump. It is comfortable and is effective when pumping milk. It is easy to carry around since the pump can be placed in the carrier that comes with the pump kit.

Even though this is a manual pump and not an electrical one, it has been my favorite breast pump thus far. I use it for times when I’ll be away from baby for a night or during out of town trips away from baby where I’ll need to relieve the pressure and keep up my milk supply until I return. This pump costs around $25 and comes quite in handy for those who need a pump just some of the time rather than on a consistent basis.

I like how portable this pump is. There are three parts that must be assembled for each use. It is the base (with the breastshield), the handle and the bottle. The handle snaps right on top of the base and the bottle screws into the bottom to fill with milk. The breastshield is a soft, flexible plastic that fits over the breast. These can be unassembled and placed in a small travel bag which is easy for storage or for traveling.

The Medela manual pump is very easy to use and quite effective, too. I find that I can get more milk out with this than electrical brands. The handle has two methods of extracting the milk, called a 2-Phase Expression. One is to mimic the natural sucking that a baby does as soon as he latches on, which is rapid. The other has longer sucking strokes to mimic the natural rhythm of a baby as he drinks milk. The two of these are able to effectively extract the milk.

Medela sells another manual breast pump that utilizes a long spring that attaches to the base, instead of the handle of the Harmony one. Be aware that this isn’t the same hand pump and this one actually works horribly and is not worth your money. The Harmony one, however, is the one I always recommend to other breastfeeding mothers who have tried various pumps and can’t seem to catch a break. They agree this one is easy to use and does work.
